Former Germany skipper Michael Ballack appears to be heading for the Bayer Leverkusen exit, after the midfielder revealed that will leave the Bay Arena this summer.
The 35-year old returned to club for his second spell – following the three years he spent at the club between 1999 and 2002 – last year, establishing himself as an essential part of the side after his move from Chelsea.
While it was expected the midfielder would extend his stay at the club for another season before possibly hanging up his boots, Ballack has now revealed he will definitely leave the club when his contract expires in the summer. Those following the Bundesliga betting may be a little surprised.
The 98-cap German international has been quick to refute claims that he is set to announce his retirement, however, with the veteran insisting that he intends to continue his playing career.
“I signed on here for two years and it was clear for both parties from the very beginning that it was only planned for this period of time”. “I am not going to give up playing altogether.I have never said that. I still have six more months to consider my situation and I will do that without any pressure.” said Ballack.
Ballack’s opening season back at Leverkusen was an injury-disrupted one, however, the new campaign has seen him establish himself as a central part of the team’s plans – albeit, in a team that has struggled to replicate their impressive accomplishments from last season.
Some would expect the experienced midfielder to, possibly, head to a final pay-off in the US or the Middle East; it appears Ballack will stay in the Bundesliga, possibly in the shape of Wolfsburg – who are apparently weighing up a move for the 35-year old in the summer.
